The Hales Corners Neighborhood Watch Program has been in existence for over 15 years. The purpose of this program is to get local citizens to take an active role in watching out for each other. To achieve that goal the program enlists volunteers from each “neighborhood” to take the role of Block Captain. The Block Captain is the contact between the police department and the neighborhood. Information on criminal activity is passed in both directions. The Block Captain regularly meets with their citizens in their neighborhood and shares this information with them. The Block Captains know their neighborhood the best having a rapport with its members and makes for one point of contact for the department. The police department holds quarterly meetings with all of the Block Captains and any one else from the neighborhoods are welcome to attend.
Meetings are held twice a year and if the need arises special meetings can be organized. As Hales Corners is a smaller community, we invite everyone in the Village to attend.
Neighborhood Watch meeting also allow for dissemination of current information on credit card fraud, check fraud scams and identity theft. A key to combat crime is for neighbors to get to know each other, their neighborhood and their police department. The recognition of who belongs in a neighborhood and who is a stranger is best accomplished by responsible residents. The timely reporting of this type of information to the police is a powerful tool in crime prevention and deterrence.
